Nokia 7380 fashion phone was released in 2005, as part of the “L’Amour Collection”, along with the 7360, 7370, 7373 and the 7390. The 7380 was designed at Nokia’s Design Center in California (Lead Designer: Miki Mehandjiysky).
What distinguishes this phone from others is its sensory navigation key which differs greatly from a conventional keypad and functions similarly to the touch-sensitive navigation wheel of the iPod.
The display of the phone is another point if interest, measuring approximately 1.5 inches by 7 inches. The screen is also known for becoming highly reflective when in power saving mode, with the ability to double as a mirror.
This function, however, does not seem to hinder its visibility, including in dark situations. It is worth mentioning that the Nokia 7380 was one of the first phones to implement the use of real materials- such as metal and leather- in mass production.
Nokia 7380 has a 2 megapixel camera, up to 52MB built-in memory (non-expandable), FM radio and Bluetooth and sports Pop-Port connectivity.
The “L’Amour Collection” won the prestigious 2006 IDEA Award (Silver) by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).
The Nokia 7380 is the straight replacement for the radical 7280, and in terms of size and weight it is almost exactly the same size at 114×30x20mm and 80 grams. Don’t let the “pen” concept fool you into thinking that this is a small handset though – at 63cc in volume, it’s only 15% smaller than the 7360 and
7370 models. It’s a more attractive design though, in our opinion.
As with the previous model, the Nokia 7380 comes with Bluetooth, a 104×208 pixel reflective display, and the rotator/selector device. However, the camera is now a 2 megapixel unit with a flash, which turns the Nokia 7380 into a clever, compact camera phone. It also has a built in MP3 player, but no expandable memory (although the 7280 had 50Mb of internal shared memory, so presumably the 7380 has at least that much).
Reviews of the 7280’s keyless dialling were mixed, but on balance it seems that the system was usable, especially when supplemented with voice commands and a comprehensive phonebook of numbers. Let’s be honest, if you’re a die-hard texter then the 7380 isn’t the handset for you!
Will it sell? Well, the previous model didn’t exactly fly off the shelves, but the significantly better camera means that the 7380 is more that just a fashion accessory, it’s handy for taking good quality pictures too.
Maximum talkime is 3 hours with up to 10 days standby. Nokia say that the 7380 should be available from Q1 2006 at a price of around 500 euros before subsidies and taxes.
